
What is the Clinician Scientist Role in the School of Nursing?
- An unpaid appointment (like adjunct)
- Are primarily nurses and nurse practitioners
- Must have a PhD
- Must have a significant percentage of employment role in research (at least 40%, usually more)
- Must also be employed in a clinical position outside of UBC as a primary appointment (not another university)
Ranks of Clinician Scientists
- 3-year appointment
- can be reappointed
- at least 5 years before potential promotion to next rank
- 5-year appointment
- repeating
- can be promoted after at least 6 years if significant research achievements
- 5 year appointment
- repeating
- may be eligible for UBC Emeritus status at retirement (with enough years in rank)

Procedures for Appointment
- The Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure (ARPT) Subcommittee for this role consists of the Associate Director of Research, Associate Director of Graduate Programs, and two others.
- Application: Send CV and letter of interest outlining area of research focus and clinical expertise, addressed to the Director of the School by email (link below)
- ARPT Subcommittee reviews and recommends for vote at ARPT
- First appointment for three years, can be reappointed, can be promoted with relevant levels of research achievement
- While not directly equivalent to tenure track faculty criteria, expectations are relatively similar
