Abstract
The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) workforce has experienced uneven and, at times, unstable periods in efforts to establish, sustain and grow the role, which has limited its impact. We present findings from an integrated knowledge translation study conducted in partnership with the BC CNS community and senior nursing leaders. We conducted three distinct research activities: an environmental scan of contemporary evidence, a provincial survey capturing the voices of 93% of BC CNS workforce, and a qualitative study of the perspectives of Chief Nursing Officers, senior nursing leaders, and a diverse group of CNSs. Findings led to the co-development of policy recommendations to optimize the CNS workforce in BC. These recommendations were endorsed by the Provincial Nursing and Allied Health Council, which includes all Chief Nursing Officers and Ministry of Health representatives, and are now informing workforce and policy initiatives in other Canadian jurisdictions.
