Adjunct Faculty at the UBC School of Nursing

The UBC School of Nursing recognizes the valuable and diverse contributions from close partnerships with members of the Adjunct Faculty. Adjunct Professors enrich the School of Nursing community and enhance the expertise available to faculty and students for research, teaching and service activities.

Roles and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of Adjunct Faculty members are highly varied, and may include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing suitable learning experiences for undergraduate or graduate students (e.g., teaching, mentoring, supervising);
  • Direct guidance of students during clinical experiences;
  • Facilitation of nursing research activities;
  • Providing input on School of Nursing committees, working groups or strategic initiatives (e.g. , policy evaluation or implementation, leadership, and international collaborative opportunities);
  • Membership on graduate student dissertation, thesis, and primary care project (NP) supervisory committees, when qualified;
  • Participation in School of Nursing sponsored rounds, workshops, seminars, and conferences,
  • Participation in School-related continuing education activities;
  • Participation in invited guest lectures and/or seminar participation
  • Facilitation of networking opportunities to strengthen the connection between the School of Nursing, health, community, and/or policy organizations or other interested parties
  • Consultation related to curriculum development;
  • Community liaison, resource development or other strategic objectives of the School.

Appointments

Step 1: Expression of interest

To be invited to apply for an Adjunct Faculty appointment, a tenure stream UBC Nursing faculty member must nominate you for consideration by the Director’s office and the School of Nursing Adjunct Appointment Committee.

Step 2: Application

If the nomination is accepted, potential candidates will be invited to submit their application package which typically includes the following documentation:

  • a letter of interest outlining current and potential contributions to the School of Nursing;
  • a biographical statement of expertise and current responsibilities (250 word maximum);
  • a curriculum vitae or resume, and
  • a letter of support from a UBC School of Nursing faculty member (excluding existing  adjunct faculty members).

Step 3: Recommendation and appointment

Complete submissions are forwarded to the School of Nursing’s Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee for review and recommendation. Recommendations by that committee must also be approved by the Director of the School, the Dean of the Faculty and the Vice President, Academic, UBC before they come into effect. Appointments typically begin July 1 and last for 1 to 3 years with an option to renew at the end of the appointment.

Step 4: Notification

If successful, you will receive a confirmation of your appointment and the associated term, and an invitation to seek opportunities to contribute to the School of Nursing. 
 

Renewals

It is the responsibility of current adjunct faculty to apply for a renewal at the end of your appointment term if you are interested in continuing to hold the role of adjunct faculty. 

You will receive notice when the term of your appointment is ending. Therefore, please keep your contact information up-to-date. 

You are eligible to renew your adjunct appointment if you are approved to apply for renewal, a tenure stream UBC Nursing faculty member continues to support your application, and you are still:

  • actively employed in nursing or related health fields
  • do not have primary employment as faculty at any other university or School of Nursing
  • living in British Columbia, with rare exceptions.

As part of the School’s reappointment guidelines for adjunct faculty, you will be asked to submit the following to be considered for re-appointment:

  • A letter of interest outlining your current and potential contributions to the School of Nursing
  • A biographical statement of expertise and current responsibilities (250 words); and
  • An updated curriculum vitae or resume
