NURSING ROUNDS: Simulation: Imagining the Future of Health Care Professional Development

Abstract: Simulation is an innovative method of teaching health care professionals clinical skills, teamwork, conflict resolution, leadership and role development. Should it replace aspects of clinical practice? How is it being standardized and utilized provincially, nationally, and internationally in the education and development of health care professionals for the future? Come and join the debate as we look at where we have been and where we are going in the use of simulation.

Bio: Dr. Suzanne Campbell is Director of the UBC School of Nursing. Dr. Campbell is a registered nurse (1983), women’s health nurse practitioner (1999), Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC 2002) and a seasoned educator incorporating technology and emerging pedagogy in her approaches. Dr. Campbell’s teaching and research stems from her career in high risk maternity centers, in the community supporting and promoting breastfeeding, and as a nurse practitioner in a private breastfeeding medical practice. Dr. Campbell has published articles on simulation, lactation, nursing education, and is co-editor of a simulation book Simulation Scenarios for Nursing Educators: Making it Real, (2nd Ed., 2013). She received the International Nurses Association of Clinical Simulation Learning (INACSL) Excellence in Academic Setting – Mentor Award (2011).
