NURSING ROUNDS: The Synergy Model

Abstract: Dr. Maura MacPhee was involved with the synergy model as the Professional Practice Director for Boston Children’s Hospital over a decade ago. This model is the professional practice framework for the nurses, leadership and other healthcare professionals of this magnet organization. The synergy model has since been adopted as the professional practice model in numerous outstanding healthcare organizations in the US. After coming to Canada, she began introducing the model through action research projects in different health authorities and sectors in BC. Now the model is being used in BC, Saskatchewan and Ontario. This presentation will describe the model and provide an overview of the synergy model work underway in Canada.

Bio: Dr. Maura MacPhee is an Associate Professor at the UBC School of Nursing, and the current Associate Director for the BSN program. She studies those factors associated with healthy work environments, including effective nurse leadership, workload management and shared governance. She uses mixed methods research: her expertise is participatory action research.
