The School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver campus invites applications for a part‐time Sessional Lecturer to teach NURS 560 The Politics of Health Policy in the 2022 Winter Term 1. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2022.

Course Description

This course is the study of the processes and strategies influencing health and social policy, and the social and political contexts in which policy is created. Course objectives include: Critically examine the different theoretical and ideological perspectives from which policy is conceptualized; Analyze the social, political and economic contexts in which policy is created and enacted. Interpret health and social policy processes in the context of larger social trends and political mandates; Examine how policies differentially affect particular populations and shape health and social inequities; Identify new directions needed in health and social policy development; Critically examine how nurses and other health professionals can influence policy development and implementation.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of the UBC School of Nursing, the incumbent will be responsible for the preparation of course lessons, classroom teaching as well as course development and development of materials to support students’ engagement and learning in Canvas. This will also include the evaluation of students (marking assignments and evaluating participation) according to identified evaluation criteria and participating in meetings with the teaching team to inform course/program evaluation. The term of the appointment also includes all end‐of‐course work, including any deferred or supplemental examinations that might be required or re‐reads that students are entitled to receive. You are expected to meet all grade submission deadlines.

Qualifications

Successful applicants will have Master’s or PhD in Nursing, other health discipline or social science background with experience in qualitative research methods. Applicants should submit a brief cover letter and CV including relevant education background, teaching and research experience, training, publications, and/or awards to: Melissa Aspinall (Melissa.aspinall@ubc.ca). This position is subject to final budgetary approval and will be governed by UBC's "Agreement on Conditions of Appointment for Sessional Faculty Members”. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
