Celebrate National Nursing Week with ⭐RADICAL REBELLION⭐
A "good" Canadian Nurse is not a lesbian, sex worker, Black woman...UNTIL NOW
Featuring the talents of Cleo Victory, Mx Bukuru and Rose Butch this experience showcases a drag-burlesque performance created by professional queer Kyra Philbert. Observing the methodology of a/r/tography, Kyra developed this work as a component of her thesis project for her Master of Science in Nursing (UBC, 2022). Kyra was co-supervised by Drs. Lydia Wytenbroek and John Oliffe. Her ethical inquiry pondered,
“what makes Blackness so surprising in Canadian Nursing?”
Rendering this question by Katherine McKittrick specific to a profession that proclaims an ethos of social justice, Kyra critically explores the wonder of Black Canada to revise nursing history. Kyra reimagines the historical figure of Marie-Joseph Angélique** as a contemporary Canadian nurse.
There will be a post-show talkback facilitated by Mx. Bukuru for the audience to share reflections/ thoughts/questions.
** In 1734, a Portuguese-born Black woman known as Marie-Joseph Angélique, was accused of arson, put on trial, and executed in Montréal. Today, the court records documenting her case are primary historical evidence that slavery was a practiced, protected, and sanctioned institution in territories now known as Canada.
