Nursing Over Time: Broadening Horizons

Dr. Wendy A. Hall is a Professor Emeritus of the School of Nursing. She is the recipient of two UBC Killam Teaching Prizes, a Registered Nurses Association of BC award of excellence in Nursing Education and a College of Registered Nurses of BC award of excellence in Nursing Research. Dr. Hall received the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing Award for Excellence in Nursing Education (Tenured) in 2016. Her program of research focuses on building parental capacity, particularly competence and confidence, and linking parental capacity to healthy child development, particularly in the area of pediatric sleep. Dr. Hall has developed behavioral interventions to assist parents to manage children’s sleep problems and acts as a consultant to parents who are experiencing children’s sleep problems. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts. Dr. Hall served as an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and as an Associate Director the School of Nursing Graduate Program. She was a UBC Senator from 2008-2014. She has remained active in research projects following her retirement and was inducted as a Fellow into the Canadian Nurses Association Fellowship Program in October, 2022.

Health and medicine is a lens through which Lydia Wytenbroek analyzes the global circulation of medical knowledge and power. Her research explores American women surgeon and nurse missionaries in twentieth-century Iran and argues that mission nurses' efforts to promote American nursing in Iran intersected with Reza Shah's modernizing initiatives in a way that served Iranian nationalism and state building. Lydia's work is locally grounded, but uses transnational medical encounters in Iran to explore larger issues of global migration, nursing imperialism, the often false dichotomy between religion and professionalization, gender liberation and the power and politics of global health initiatives.

Dr. Elizabeth Straus (they/she) is an autistic and disabled nurse scholar and educator whose research engages critical disability studies, discourse analysis, new materialist, queer, narrative, and arts-based approaches to inform and transform narratives of disability in health care and education. They are also a Green College Society member and completed their PhD in Nursing at UBC in June 2022. They are currently a Postdoctoral Fellow with ReVision: The Centre for Art and Social Justice at the University of Guelph. Their postdoctoral project will explore how autistic people are doing - and undoing - gender, sexuality, and autism using a multimedia storymaking approach.
