Building Capacity in Dementia Care Research through an Innovative Pan-Canadian, Interdisciplinary Graduate Student Writing Group
About
As part of the capacity building objective of the CIHR Chair in Sex and Gender Science held by Dr. Jennifer Baumbusch (2020 – 2024), an innovative, pan-Canadian, interdisciplinary graduate writing group was formed in 2023. The program entailed a virtual workshop series on academic writing for publication and collective work towards publishing peer-reviewed papers based on the longitudinal, qualitative research study “Navigating care and negotiating health services: the experiences of community-dwelling people living with dementia and their family caregivers.” In this presentation, Jennifer will discuss the process of forming and running the writing group and will share the lessons learned from this experience. Christine Meng, a doctoral student at the UBC School of Nursing, will present the paper developed by her group on trauma-informed practices in community-based dementia care. Together, they will consider the complexities of working with a large amount of data from a longitudinal qualitative study and the value of using such studies as training experiences for graduate students.
