MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (MSN) PROGRAM DETAILS

OVERVIEW

The School of Nursing has been a leader in knowledge development and scholarship in nursing for almost a hundred years. Our master's program alumni are making an impact at local, national, and international levels.

Program completion opens new horizons for nurses in education, advanced practice, policy implementation, healthcare management, and nursing knowledge development.

WHAT MAKES THE PROGRAM UNIQUE?

We have one of the largest graduate nursing programs in Canada, and we offer graduate students an opportunity to become a part of a community of scholars characterized by diversity, mutual respect, and integration.

The MSN program prepares students for employment in the public or private sector, or to pursue further studies in a PhD program. Graduates occupy leadership positions within numerous health authorities in Canada and the international community, as well as teaching positions in colleges and universities. Program graduates create new initiatives in delivery of care, the advancement and application of knowledge, and the evolution of health policy.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be registered nurses with a bachelor's degree, normally in nursing, who meet the admission requirements of the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

The minimum academic requirements include:

  • A minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC) in third- and fourth- year courses
  • Academic standing with at least 12 credits of third-or fourth- year courses in the A grade range (80% or higher at UBC) in the field of study

Alternatively, applicants who do not meet the requirements stated above, but who have had other significant formal training, relevant professional experience, and/or otherwise possess demonstrable knowledge or expertise that would prepare them adequately for successful study in a specific graduate program, may be granted admission on the recommendation of the appropriate graduate program and approval of the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Individuals of Aboriginal ancestray are particularly encouraged to apply. Please read the additional information for Aboriginal applicants to graduate programs.

Note: Additional coursework outside the bachelor's degree to improve a low GPA or to meet the 12 credit requirement, for example as unclassified student at UBC, can be taken into consideration based on a rationale from a specific program, but does not guarantee eligibility for admission.
