What period of time may I apply for a Letter of Good Standing?
Given the fact that ESN hours must be completed before the start of Preceptorship (i.e., Term 5 practice course NURS 427), there will be a cut-off date for issuing Letters of Good Standing, after which the Student Services office will no longer issue LoGS to students. The process, timeline and key deadline dates will be communicated to students by mid-February of Term 2.
When will I receive the forms I need for ESN and HCA opportunities?
Students in the accelerated UBC-V BSN Program are eligible to work as ESNs/HCAs only after they successfully complete NURS 331: Theoretical Perspectives in Nursing: Adults/Older Adults Experiencing Acute Health Challenges and Their Families and NURS 361: Nursing Practice with Adults/Older Adults Experiencing Acute Health Challenges and Their Families. These courses are both taken in UBC's Summer Term which runs from April/May until late July/beginning of August*. This is the only term when these courses are offered.
At UBC-V, the Clinical Practice Placement Unit (CPPU) and Student Services Office (SSO) handle the generation and distribution of forms students need to pursue ESN/HCA opportunities. The SSO/CPPU distribute the required forms as follows:
- BCCNM Form 10.1 (Confirmation of Enrolment): Students in good standing may request completion of Form 10.1 from the Student Services Office by emailing bsnprogram@nursing.ubc.ca.
- Letter of Good Standing: After final grades for all Summer Term courses have been confirmed (early August): CPPU/SSO will share Letters of Good Standing with the students who have requested these.

Will I need to be licensed to work as an ESN
Students employed as ESNs are subject to regulatory oversight and inquiry and discipline of the British Columbia College of Nurse and Midwives (BCCNM), held to BCCNM Standards of Practice “As BCCNM registrants, employed student registrants are held to all applicable BCCNM Standards of Practice that set out requirements for RNs or RPNs.” (BCCNM Employed Student Registrants Practice Standard (2022)).
