The provincial opioid epidemic: What is the role of nurses in providing evidence-based care?

With more than 700 overdose deaths in B.C. last year, nurses play an integral role in mitigating the ongoing opioid crisis. This presentation will provide an overview of the epidemiology of the provincial opioid epidemic, and highlight the growing role of nurses in providing evidence-based care, leadership, policy and education for substance use disorders.

Cheyenne Johnson, RN, MPH, CCRP is a Clinical and Research Leader at the BC Centre on Substance Use.  Cheyenne holds a degree in Nursing from Queen’s University and a Master’s in Public Health from Simon Fraser University and is a Certified Clinical Research Professional.  Cheyenne is also the Director of the BC Centre on Substance Use Addiction Nursing Fellowship (Canada’s only addiction nursing training program) and is an alumna of the program.
Pauline Voon, RN, PhD(c) is a Research Associate at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, Trudeau and Vanier Scholar at the UBC School of Population and Public Health, and Associate Director of the BC Centre on Substance Use Fellowship in Addiction Nursing.
