Public Health Nursing: The cornerstone for global access to universal health coverage by 2030

Speaking at the International Council of Nurses Congress in Singapore in July 2019, World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus argued that “investing in a stronger nursing workforce is essential for achieving universal health coverage.” And he cited the UN High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth conclusion that “health workers are an investment that pays a triple return for health, gender equality and economic growth.”

In the 2019 Verna Huffman Splane Public Health Nursing Lecture, Michael Villeneuve will reflect on the history of public health nursing in Canada, its impacts on population health, and push us all to respond to the global call to position nurses effectively to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals to build a better world by 2030.

BIO: After four decades of progressive experience across all domains of nursing practice, Michael Villeneuve was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) in June 2017. As this role he leads CNA’s operations which include 140,000 members across all 13 Canadian provinces and territories, and he is implementing a forward-leaning vision to position the organization to help maximize the utilization and impact of the nursing workforce across Canada.

Over the past 20 years, Michael has emerged as a leading voice in nursing and health policy across Canada. During that time, he held executive leadership, teaching and consulting roles with the federal Office of Nursing Policy, the OECD in Paris, the Academy of Canadian Executive Nurses, the University of Toronto, and the National Expert Commission conducted to recommend solutions to transform Canadian health systems. He has consulted, published and spoken widely across Canada and around the world on ideas to deploy and utilize nursing workforces differently to achieve better health, better care and better value for the people nurses serve. One of three authors of CNA’s centennial history book (2013), Michael also is author of Public Policy and Canadian Nursing: Lessons from the Field (2017) — the first Canadian text focused on nursing and public policy. Recognizing his contributions to health policy, in 2018 he was named by the Hill Times as one of the Top 100 Lobbyists in Ottawa.

Michael serves as Co-Director of the Centre for Research on Health and Nursing, University of Ottawa, Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Toronto and Adjunct Professor at McGill University in Montreal, and he will be inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in October 2019.
