Promoting Health Equity in the Cancer Care Sector: Toward Equity-Oriented Cancer Care
About
Time: 12-1pm
Abstract: Despite clinical advances and publicly funded healthcare in Canada, alarming differences exist in cancer outcomes for people who experience significant health and social inequities, including higher cancer mortality and advanced cancers at diagnosis. Such outcomes are linked to the compounding effects of racism, stigma, discrimination, and other intersecting barriers, which create persistent inequities in accessing care at all points in the cancer trajectory. A key pathway to addressing this health equity gap and improving access to cancer care includes integrating equity-oriented healthcare in the cancer care sector. In this presentation, Dr. Tara Horrill (postdoctoral fellow supervised by Dr. Annette Browne and Dr. Kelli Stajduhar) will discuss some of the root causes of current inequities in the cancer care sector, the need for organizational- and systems-level changes, and the potential impact of integrating equity-oriented healthcare approaches within the cancer care sector to improve access to care and healthcare experiences for those most impacted by health and social inequities.
