Transitioning from Pediatric to Adult Healthcare Services: Understanding the Personal and Population-level Experiences of Youth with Intellectual Disabilities
Presenters: Dr. Jennifer Baumbusch & Dr. Sandra Marquis
Abstract: Transitions from the pediatric to adult healthcare system have been identified as a period of increased risk of gaps in care and poor health outcomes for youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). During this webinar, Dr. Baumbusch will share personal reflections on her family’s experiences of this transition. Dr. Marquis will present results from her post-doctoral fellowship research program examining health care usage by youth aged 15-24 as they transitioned from pediatric to adult services. This research program uses population-level administrative health data from the Ministry of Health in British Columbia. Areas of healthcare covered in the webinar will include: medically necessary dental procedures, visits for gynecological issues, use of emergency department services, mental health diagnoses, and use of prescription medicines, especially antipsychotics. The webinar will conclude with recommendations to improve these transitions, focusing on roles for both families and healthcare providers.
