Trauma-informed design: A new approach to developing safer sexual and reproductive health interventions.
About
A CASN Lunch and Learn Series | Use of machine learning, artificial intelligences and big data: Implications for nursing research and education
Dr. Fatawu Abdulai, assistant professor and co-director of digital health research with the Contraception and Abortion Research Team, presents this CASN Lunch and Learn webinar.
In recent years, the adoption of digital health has facilitated access to sexual and reproductive health services, particularly for marginalized populations who face geographical, systemic, and intersecting barriers to access to care. At the same time, there are also concerns about how these technological advances can trigger, perpetuate, or exacerbate traumatic experiences among marginalized populations who may have prior experiences of trauma. Despite the emerging threats of technology-mediated trauma, there are no clear guidelines on designing and deploying digital health interventions that limit the potential for harm to end-user patients. Using preliminary findings from two projects on this topic, this presentation will first highlight the gaps in the literature on how trauma-informed care is taken up in digital health research and explore ways technology-mediated trauma could occur in digital health. The presentation will conclude with some recommendations on how to mitigate potential technology-mediated trauma during the design and deployment of digital health.
