Congratulations to Dr. Elaine Carty, one of the newest members of The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame (CMHF). Elaine is being recognized for "Help[ing] to promote legalization and professional recognition of midwifery throughout Canada." During Elaine’s longtime faculty appointment in Nursing, her research created the platform for legalizing midwifery in BC. Not all midwives are nurses, so when it came time for UBC to create its direct-entry midwifery program, it was placed under the organizational structure of the Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Family Practice, and Elaine was seconded for several years to be the inaugural Director of that program. Although other units at UBC are justifiably happy to claim her, we are delighted that her actual faculty appointment until she retired was still in Nursing. We will never stop claiming her as ours, and no one is prouder of her achievements than we are!
Hearty congratulations, Dr. Elaine Carty!
