The Alma Mater Society awards this distinction at the recommendation of undergraduate and graduate student societies, to members of the UBC community who have shown outstanding passion and work in the spirit of service for students throughout the year.

In the 40-year history of the award, Lydia is Nursing's 9th recipient of this award, joining Nassim Adhami (2023 awardee) as our most recent awardees. The NUS has shared the following remarks from the award presentation:

Dr. Lydia Wytenbroek has championed events and projects that celebrate and magnify the voices of marginalized nurses. Lydia has been an active supporter of student initiatives supported by the NUS, such as the BSN Anti-Racism Book Club. As an educator, Lydia is known to go above and beyond when teaching, seeking creative learner-centred teaching methods that engage students in the professional, historical and socio-political development of nursing. Lydia's integration of her role as a social historian into her teaching not only enriches her students' understanding but also instills a profound respect for the evolution of nursing as a profession. Her passion is infectious, inspiring students to delve deeper into their studies with genuine curiosity and enthusiasm. Lydia's warm student-centred approach ensures that every student feels supported and valued, creating an inclusive and dynamic learning environment that has made a lasting impact on her students and colleagues. Furthermore, her ability to convey even 'dry' material with such depth and relevance demonstrates her exceptional dedication to both her students' education and the broader implications of nursing history. Through her tireless efforts, Lydia has significantly contributed to shaping a more informed, compassionate, and historically informed generation of nurses. The Nursing Undergraduate Society is deeply appreciative of faculty that embody the spirit of true mentorship and leadership in education and is proud to award Lydia Wytenbroek with the 2024 AMS Just Desserts Award.

Congratulations, Lydia!
