Trevor Goodyear Announced as Killam Doctoral Scholarship Awardee

On March 8, 2021, Trevor Goodyear, a PhD student in the School of Nursing was announced as 1 of 7 awardees of the Killam Doctoral Scholarships. These are recognized as the most prestigious graduate awards available at UBC and are awarded to the top doctoral candidates in the annual Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral (CGSD-D) and UBC Affiliated Fellowship. The scholarship provides an annual stipend of $30,000 for 2 years plus $2,000 for research-related travel.

Trevor recently completed a dual MPH (Master of Public Health) – MSN (Master of Science in Nursing) degree in November 2020. His thesis was titled “Investigating the health-related experiences and trajectories of direct-acting antiviral hepatitis C virus treatment among people who inject drugs” and was co-supervised by Dr. Helen Brown and Dr. Rod Knight with Dr. Annette Browne on the supervisory committee.

Beginning in January 2021, Trevor’s doctoral project is titled “Out on the street: A critical ethnography with homeless 2SLGBTQ+ youth who use drugs” under the supervision of Dr. Emily Jenkins and Dr. Rod Knight. His research aims to address noteworthy evidence gaps through an examination of how individual, social, and structural determinants influence the health and well-being of homeless 2SLGBTQ+ people under 30 years of age. He hopes that this study will generate timely evidence to identify how interventions can best reduce drug-related harms and improve outcomes for this population.

Congratulations Trevor!
