The Heart & Stroke Foundation, with Brain Canada, and the CIHR Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health have named PhD student Ismália De Sousa among "Nineteen Black scholars in Canada to receive inaugural funding awards."

Congratulations to Ismália De Sousa, one of several researchers studying heart and brain research to receive support from Heart & Stroke, Brian Canada, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health (CIHR-ICRH). This is the inaugural conferring of these awards, given to 19 Black Scholars in this field and "marking a significant stride in promoting diversity within the heart and brain health research community."
Ismália De Sousa is a Doctoral Candidate in the School of Nursing at the University of British Columbia (UBC), under the supervision of Dr. Sally Thorne, Dr. Sandra Lauck and Dr. Thalia Field. She is also a Teaching Assistant at the UBC School of Nursing and a Research Assistant in the Vancouver Stroke Program at Vancouver General Hospital/UBC. Ismália's area of interest focusses on stroke care, stroke survivorship and health inequities, particularly in young women.
