Indigenous Applicants
Historical and ongoing colonialism and racism in Canada impact the implementation of Indigenous Peoples‘ human rights and the promotion of health equity and social justice. The UBC School of Nursing seeks to promote Indigenous Peoples’ human rights, health equity and social justice. Our Indigenous Cultural Safety Committee is overseeing the implementation of the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan (2020) with the goal of ending anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination within the context of nursing undergraduate and graduate education, research, and service. These goals are also derived from the Truth and Reconciliation Calls for Action (2015) (see note 1), United Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (see note 2), the Murdered & Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls (MMIWG) and 2SLGBTQQIA Calls for Justice (see note 3), and the In Plain Sight report recommendations (see note 4).
Admissions for Indigenous undergraduate nursing students at UBC-Vancouver is guided by the UBC policy on Canadian Aboriginal Undergraduate Students:
- View the policy
- In the UBC-V School of Nursing we apply this policy by performing a case-by-case examination of applications from self-identified Indigenous students.
The policy on Canadian Aboriginal Undergraduate Students states that:
- “UBC may consider applicants who do not meet the current competitive admission cut-off set by the individual faculties and schools, but who meet the University-wide academic minimum of 70% for first-year programs or the grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale for applicants applying from a recognized post-secondary institution. Applicants must also satisfy program pre-requisites set by the individual faculties and schools”
- “Applicants who wish to be considered under this admission category must self-identify as Aboriginal upon application for admission to the University”
- “A number of factors indicative of personal readiness to succeed at UBC will be considered.”
We welcome Indigenous students to self-identify in the UBC application system because it lets us know who you are.
