Current Teaching
David Byres is the Associate Deputy Minister, Clinical Leadership for the Ministry of Health. He is responsible for Primary Care, Pharmaceutical Services and Pharmacare, Specialized Services (including surgery, diagnostic imaging, frail and vulnerable adults and mental health and addictions), Provincial Programs, Hospitals and Laboratory Services, Population and Public Health, the Office of Indigenous Health and the Nursing Policy Secretariat. David has over 20 years of experience in the health sector including having served both as Vice President and Chief of Professional Practice and Nursing for Providence Health Care. He leads British Columbia’s Nursing Policy Secretariat and the development of an integrated team based care strategy in support of the Ministry of Health’s strategic objectives with a focus on team based primary care.
David began his health career working in community mental health and then as a registered nurse in medicine, mental health, community, and emergency settings. He holds a Fellowship in Management for Executive Nurses from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania and is a past co-chair of the Nursing Research Advisory Council for the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and a Past President of the Xi Eta Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honour Society of Nursing.
