The School of Nursing in the Faculty of Applied Science at The University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver campus, invites applications for a twelve-month 0.6 FTE term position at the rank of Research Associate with Capacity: The Centre for Research in Community Engagement and Gender Equity [“Capacity Research Centre”]. This position has an anticipated start date of May 15, 2025 or as soon as feasible thereafter. The expected salary for this 0.6 FTE position is $60,000 per annum.

The Capacity Research Centre is an interdisciplinary research and training centre advancing studies to reduce stigma and discrimination and the structural factors that perpetuate health and social inequities. The Capacity Research Centre also works to enhance community engagement and leadership in research, policy and knowledge mobilization. We respectfully acknowledge that the Capacity Research Centre is situated in the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam). We also acknowledge that we conduct and facilitate research activities across the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and in the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation and their peoples.

Working directly with Dr. Vicky Bungay, Director of the Capacity Research Centre, the Research Associate will assume a leadership role in the recently funded project “Understanding and Enhancing System-Level Drivers of Community Services with Women Experiencing Gender-based Violence in British Columbia.” The key objectives of the project are to: understand the political and economic regulatory factors that reproduce, enhance or reduce the community service organizations’ (CSOs) leadership capacity in GBV advocacy and service provision; generate new knowledge about CSOs experiences navigating regulatory structures, and translate results into policy and programming recommendations. The Research Associate will also take on a key role in the completion of a community-partnered research project situated in northern BC. 

 

Core responsibilities:

  • Overall research project management, including team and project coordination, for the Understanding and Enhancing System-Level Drivers project which will include but is not limited to: the development and coordination of a project advisory committee, a rapid scoping review of published and grey literature, focus groups and interviews with key stakeholders from CSOs, data analysis, and the planning, coordination and co-facilitating (with the project’s co-leads) end of grant knowledge mobilization activities.
  • Final qualitative analysis and the production of a community report and key stakeholder briefs for a community-partnered research project situated in northern BC. 
  • Work collaboratively with the Principal Investigator and team members for each project on community knowledge mobilization activities, as well as the development of academic papers and presentations.
  • Exercise professional judgment and initiative in the coordination and completion of research tasks, and provide regular updates to Principal Investigator on research activities, ensuring timely notification to Principal Investigator of issues or problems.

     

Vicky Bungay, Principal Investigator and Director of the Capacity Research Centre will provide supervision. Work is reviewed periodically to assess progress and the achievement of defined goals. This position may provide direction to graduate and undergraduate students hired to support these projects.

Applicants must have a earned a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., nursing, population and public health, sociology) from a recognized academic institution and completed at least one year as a postdoctoral fellow. Strong candidates will have a strong research record demonstrating research expertise congruent with career stage; knowledge and experience with trauma and violence informed approaches to research and community engagement inclusive of research with women with living/lived experience engaging with women-specific community services; and experience utilizing community-based and participatory research principles and approaches and advanced experience with qualitative data analysis and NVivo or equivalent analytic software. Preference will be given to candidates with advanced training in gender-based analysis, as well as, with project management experience.
