We are pleased to announce that Carla Ferreira, Associate Professor of Teaching, has been awarded the Elizabeth Kenny McCann Teaching Scholarship Award for her proposed study aimed at bridging the theory-practice gap (TPG) in nursing education.
July 8, 2024
Carla Ferreira and her team were selected for their proposal, which addresses an ongoing concern that academic nurse educators (ANEs) play a crucial role in preparing a competent nursing workforce, but the rapidly evolving landscape of nursing practice can challenge their ability to teach current and relevant clinical skills. With co-applicants Dr. Nassim Adhami and Dr. Elisabeth Bailey, Carla's research seeks to address this issue by exploring ANEs' perceptions of the facilitators, barriers, and strategies for integrating theory and practice in their teaching.
What strategies are nurse educators in undergraduate nursing programs using in academic settings to close the theory-practice gap in their teaching practices?
Carla's team also aims to identify priorities for interventions to minimize TPG, ultimately enhancing the synergy between academic learning and practical application in nursing education.
The 2024 Elizabeth Kenny McCann Teaching Scholarship Award is made possible through a fund developed in memory of Elizabeth Kenny McCann. The purpose of the Elizabeth Kenny McCann Teaching Scholarship Award is to support and enhance teaching and learning pedagogy and scholarship in the UBC School of Nursing.
Congratulations, Carla, on this significant achievement!
